Many times, when you think about transforming a residence, you take into account the painting and decoration, but you forget a key piece: the floor. Undoubtedly, floor tiles can make a big difference in the setting of the home. An attractive floor can transform any room of the house or outdoor space.

Tiles are available in different sizes, tones and materials. The most important thing is to choose one that matches your taste and need, taking into consideration the area of the home where they will be placed. We recommend that you first consult an expert who can explain their qualities, advantages, disadvantages and maintenance details so that you can make an informed decision.

Sizes and textures

A trend that has remained stable in recent years is using large tiles, sizes 16″x 24,” 20″x 20,” and 24″x 24,” or even rectangular of 12″x 24.” These give the feeling of spaciousness and achieve a contemporary atmosphere, especially if they are in light colors.

Another matter to evaluate are the finishes you want. Some of them are:

  • Matte — May have some relief and is used both inside and outside
  • Bright — Can vary from semi-bright to mirror-like polishing
  • Anti-slip — Ideal for areas such as the bathroom or pool

Place them according to their size, shape and design, create traditional, geometric, asymmetric or varied patterns to give personality and distinguish your floors from others. Do not forget to also consider the dimensions of the space.

Indoor…

If you are looking for interior tiles, choose between ceramic or porcelain. There are new vinyl tiles, the so-called carpet tiles and the Colombian mud tiles. Marble tiles add elegance and clarity to the spaces and are defined by the quantity of veins. Indoors look better if they have a shiny finish.

On the other hand, there are those that simulate wood add warmth and a touch of nature to spaces. In addition, they are more convenient than original hardwood floors, as they do not require specific care.

Outdoors…

Choose more rustic and natural style tiles, or select non-slip tiles for entrance areas, driveways, terraces and pools. These can be rough (although not porous) and stain-resistant to car oil or pool chemicals.

As for natural stone, it looks perfect on exteriors because it intermingles with nature, both for its colors and its textures. There are also enameled porcelain tiles that recreate natural stones and have the advantage of not being porous. They’re stain-resistant and require little maintenance. The rustic or clay tile is ideal for these areas due to their durability and resistance to inclement weather, bumps and foot traffic.
